A Google Research engineer is working on developing a 3D map to show changes in urban landscapes andwalk precise reconstructions from many US cities since 1800, reports the Fast Company portal.
Raimondas Kiveris was curious about what his neighborhood in New York was like years ago and, not finding that information in an organized way, he decided to create a way to do a kind of "virtual time travel."
Three years later, his project begins to take shape and shows three-dimensional models of buildings from the perspective of a pedestrian: somethingsimilar to Google Street View, although still with a lower resolution.
This open source map calledrǝ and pronounced as 'return', it uses Google's artificial intelligence and machine learning tools and allows others to improve the materials already included.
Go back in time with rǝ, an open source suite of tools that leverages deep learning to enable developers, map enthusiasts, and creatives to generate historical reconstructions of cities in 3D using crowdsourced historical maps and photos. Thus, anyone can upload scans of historical printed maps, locate the coordinates and convert them to vector format by tracking their geographical characteristics, the technology company said in a statement.
Compendium of everyday life
Kiveris and his team hope they have enough data to haverealistic representations of entire neighborhoods and even showing how spaces inside buildings were seen that do not have such historical relevance to achieve "a compendium of daily life."
Those involved trust this research and entertainment tool to offer a pleasant experience and, in a few years, even serve as a setting for video games or movies.
Until now,rǝ offers a good level of detail in some parts of the island of Manhattan, whose streets can be walked as if one were back several decades ago.
